 With volatile oil prices and growing concerns about greenhouse gas emissions, the chemical industry is looking for renewable alternatives to diversify its sources of raw materials. Sugarcane (ethanol) has emerged as an important ingredient to substitute petroleum in the production of Neoprene. These so-called "bioprene" have the same physical and chemical properties as regular neoprene but can offer full recycling capabilities.

Sugarcane ethanol cuts CO2 emissions by 90 percent on recent studies,

compared to fossil fuels, and other sugarcane products with similar low-carbon advantages.  

Only a handful of countries produce oil, but more than hundred grow and farm sugarcane. 

Focusing our attention on expanding production of clean, renewable materials,

like sugarcane would help enhance energy security and reduce greenhouse gases.

These hundred sugarcane nations which cultivate cane,

are located in the tropics and developing countries.

Expanding sugarcane and renewable energy in these parts of the world,

could create sustainable jobs and increase living standards. 

Replacing fossil fuels with ethanol would improve

public health, by making air quality cleaner.

Reducing the harmful exposure to carbon dioxide in our air.

Sugarcane could replace 30 percent or more of the petroleum that

 After the (latex) seals failed on my last drysuit, I was looking for another ‘DRY’ suit. Now with the notable exception of a Helly Hansen suit that I had many years ago, I’ve NEVER had a dry suit that has remained dry for any length of time; so what to buy to replace my latest dry suit? Now I live in Norway, which despite having fantastic waters for sailing, is not particularly well stocked for dinghy/catamaran gear, and to buy another HH drysuit would set me back ~ £800 which is an unrealistic cost. Also in late May we can still ski across some of the lakes 

(okay these are in the nearby mountains – but the point is that the water has a tendency to be on the colder side when you live North of the 58th parallel).

This suit is mainly a wetsuit, but as anyone who’s done a windy championships will know that with a pure steamer (3-5 mm wet suit), (3-5 mm wetsuit),After a week of working the sheets, for the next few day's it’s not easy to bend your arms! With this suit you don’t get this – it is the best of both worlds;

-       Launching: up to the knees in water, and felt no ingress into the suit;

-       Glide skin seals (neoprene), are considerably more comfy than latex seals (and from my experience with a kayaking top, way more durable);

-       Comfy to wear when on;

-       Lots of buoyancy when in the water – float high.

Winters can be a struggle… between finding the daylight hours to surf and managing to get into the
wet/frozen wetsuit… however, it is so so sooooo totally worth it! Sun kissed dry frosty days, with a bitterly
offshore wind, holding up those hollow munchkins! I love it! I feel so incredibly blessed that I am able to surf in
these conditions. The cold is definitely something you don’t need to be afraid of, especially if it means more surfing.

Winter surfing has always been about the power hour for me. Get in, catch a few, go to get a cuppa and some fuel…

They dry really quickly so it isn’t such a hassle to put them on again…
and they keep you toasty too. It is usually the fatigue and desire for a coffee that gets me out of the water
before the cold… so if you are into your 4-hour long slogs out back then you’ll be just fine too.
